Jack Sparrow & Davy Jones |
Jack Sparrow & Davy Jones
Jack: You have my payment. One soul to serve on your ship.
One soul is not equal to another!
Jack: Aha, so we've established my proposal as sound in principle. Now we're just haggling over price.
Price?
Jack: Just how many souls do you think my soul is worth?
One hundred souls. Three days.
Jack: You're a diamond, mate. Send me back the boy. I'll get started right off.
I keep the boy. A good-faith payment. That leaves you only 99 more to go. [laughter]
Jack: Have you not met Will Turner? He's noble, heroic, a terrific soprano. Worth at least four. Maybe three and a half?
Jack: And did I happen to mention... he's in love? With a girl. Due to be married. Betrothed. Dividing him from her and her from him would only be half as cruel as actually allowing them to be joined in holy matrimony. Eh?
I keep the boy. Ninety-nine souls.
But I wonder, Sparrow, can you live with this? Can you condemn an innocent man, a friend, a lifetime of servitude in your name while you roam free?
Jack: Yep. I'm good with it. Shall we seal it in blood? I mean... ink?
Three days.

Exercising Arachne (Detail) |
In Greek mythology, Athena and Arachne are characters in a famous weaving contest. The story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of hubris and comparing oneself to the gods.
Arachne, in Greek mythology, the daughter of Idmon of Colophon in Lydia, a dyer in purple.
Arachne was a weaver who acquired such skill in her art that she ventured to challenge Athena, goddess of war, handicraft, and practical reason. Athena wove a tapestry depicting the gods in majesty, while that of Arachne showed their amorous adventures. Enraged at the perfection of her rival’s work (or, alternatively, offended by its subject matter), Athena tore it to pieces, and in despair Arachne hanged herself. But the goddess out of pity loosened the rope, which became a cobweb; Arachne herself was changed into a spider, whence the name of the zoological class to which spiders belong, Arachnida. Ovid’s Metamorphoses is the chief source of the story. (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Arachne)

Arabian Nights
The Arabian Nights is a collection of stories, all of which revolve around one main plot: a new wife, Shahrazad, must tell her husband, King Shahrayar, a new story every night lest he kill her in the morning. While some stories stand alone, several of Shahrazad’s stories contain a number of shorter tales, which are “told” by characters in Shahrazad’s story. In this way, readers hear numerous stories, told from various points of view, despite the fact that Shahrazad is the main storyteller in the text.
