셰익스피어의 <코미디 뜻대로 하세요(1603년 첫연출됨)> 에는 아주 유명한 독백의 명대사가 포함되어 있다. 그 연설의 내용 가운데에는 “모든 세계는 하나의 무대이다”(2막 7장)라는 우수적인 방랑자 자크에게서 비롯된 것으로, 사람의 상태는 연극의 무대와 비교될 수 있으며, 남자들의 경우 그들의 삶가운데 7 가지의 역할을 수행한다. (남자의 7가지 연령이라고 말한다.) 그것은 (1) 유아, (2)학생, (3) 사랑꾼, (4) 병사, (5) 정의의 사나이, (6) 판타롱(판타롱은16세기 이탈리아 코미디 연극 속에 등장하는 비유적인 어휘로서 ‘말라깽이 노인’,늙고 어리석은 베니스의 상인, 집안의 가장, 일반적으로 음탕하고 연인들의 음모에 종종 속기 쉬운 사람으로 사전에 설명되어 있다.) (7) 노인 

Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It (first performance – 1603) contains one of his most famous monologues. In the speech “All the World’s a Stage” (Act II Scene VII) given by the melancholic travellerJacques, the human condition is compared to a stage play and men to actors playing seven parts during their lives. Those of (1) the Infant, (2) the School-boy, (3) the Lover, (4) the Soldier, (5) the Justice, (6) the Pantaloon [Stock character from a 16th-century brand of Italian theatre called commedia dell’arte. According to dictionary.reference.com, a pantaloon is “a foolish old Venetian merchant, usually the head of a household, generally lascivious and frequently deceived in the course of lovers’ intrigues”] and (7) the Old Man.

머지않아 기대수명치가 상승하여, 150∼170세를 구가하는 시대가 곧 도래하리라 본다.

세상은 하나의 무대와 같다, 그리고 모든 남자와 여자는 단지 배우일뿐이다. 그들은 그들의 출구와 입구를 갖고 있으며, 그의 생의 시간 동안에 한 사람은 많은 부분을 연기할 것이다, 그리고 그의 인생은 열일곱가지로 나뉘게 된다.

Sooner after, the life expectancy become the age of 150∼170. 

The whole world is a stage, and all the men and women merely actors. They have their exits and their entrances, and in his lifetime a man will play many parts, his life separated into seventeen acts.

Then he’s the whining schoolboy, with a book bag and a bright, young face, creeping like a snail unwillingly to school.

그리고(셋째) 사랑 꾼이 되어 여교사(정부, 여 주인)의 눈썹에 관한 슬픈 시를 쓰는 것과 같은 용광로와 같이 씩씩거린다. 

Then he becomes a lover, huffing and puffing like a furnace as he writes sad poems about his mistress’s eyebrows.

넷째 역할로는, 그는 군인이 된다. 이국적인 욕설로 가득하게 되어, 표범과 같은 콧수염을 하고, 그의 명예를 지키기에 힘쓰며, 싸우기를 즐긴다. 전장에서, 대포의 포문 앞에 그 자신을 두며, 거품과도 같이 떠다니는 명성을 찾기 위해 인생의 모험을 한다. 

In the fourth act, he’s a soldier, full of foreign curses, with a beard like a panther, eager to defend his honor and quick to fight. On the battlefield, he puts himself in front of the cannon’s mouth, risking his life to seek fame that is as fleeting as a soap bubble.

In the fifth act, like a judge, with a nice fat belly from all the bribes he’s taken. His eyes are stern, and he’s given his beard a respectable cut.

열다섯 번째 역할로서, 슬리퍼에 코 끝에 안경을 걸치고 옆에는 돈 가방을 두고 나이든 말라깽이 늙은이 위에 커튼이 휘날린다. 젊었을 때에 신었던 양말(스타킹)이 지금은 느슨하게 되고, 고함 소리는 어린이의 꺅소리처럼 가늘다. 

In the sixth act, the curtain rises on a skinny old man in slippers, glasses on his nose and a money bag at his side. The stockings he wore in his youth hang loosely on his shriveled legs now, and his bellowing voice has shrunk back down to a childish squeak.

Sooner after, the life expectancy of female become the age of 170∼190. The whole world is a stage, and all the men and women merely actors. They have their exits and their entrances, and in his lifetime a man will play many parts, his life separated into seventeen acts.

머지않아 기대 수명치가 상승하여, 170∼190세를 구가하는 시대가 곧 도래하리라 본다.
