일부러 투정을 부리며 “우리 귀한 마누라에게 무슨 밥상의 차림이 이따위야!” 하며 걷어치우는 페트로치오: 이런 방식으로 약 일주일간 신부를 배고프게 하여 길들인다. (5장)

중앙은 어렵게 구혼에 성공하는 페트로치오, 부인의 팔을 붙잡고 좌측 손은 모자를 벗고 하객들에게 인사하고 있고, 신혼 부부 앞에서 칼을 든 하인이 앞서가며 길을 밝히고 있다.(3막)

On the left, the fierce woman Catherine is breaking the arm of her suitor (Patrocchio), and the suitor is looking at Catherine's face, not knowing what to do. (Act 1)
In the center, Petrocchio, who has succeeded in his courtship with difficulty, is holding his wife's arm, and with his left hand, he is taking off his hat and greeting the guests, and a servant with a sword walks ahead of the newlyweds to light the way. (Act 3)
After taming the fierce woman, they dance to confirm their love between the couple. (Act 5)

Soon after Petruchio and Katherine arrive at his house, Petruchio announces, “Sit down, Kate,/ And welcome. Food, food, food, food!” (4.1.128-9). This apparent gesture of hospitality—of welcoming Kate to eat with him—is soon shown to be a cynical ruse. Under the pretense of scolding his servants for serving him poorly, and his cooks for burning the meat, Petruchio throws the food away, along with the “trenchers, cups, and all” (155).
When Kate avers that “The meat was well if you were so contented” (159), Petruchio insists not only that “’twas burnt and dried away,” but that neither of them should be eating it anyway, and are better off avoiding such food altogether, “Since of ourselves, ourselves are choleric,/ Than feed it with such overroasted flesh” (160-5). (Those who suffered from a choleric humor were thought to be easily driven to anger and were supposed to avoid burned and dried foods. They were not, however, supposed to fast, as Petruchio erroneously insists.) This exchange sets the tone for the quarantine, in which Petruchio and his servant Grumio withhold food from Katherine while insisting that it’s for her own health that they do so.

안토니오의 노력으로 포르시아가, 법률가로 위장하여, 샤일록에게 1파운드의 살점을 취해도 좋다고 한다. 그러나 조건은 단 한방울의 피를 흘려서는 안된다고 하여 그날의 법정에서 승자가 된다. 더불어 당시의 베니스의 법에 의하면 외국인 체류자가 직/ 간접적으로 시민을 죽이려 한자는 재산의 절반을 죽이려한 당사자에게 주어야 하고 나머지 절반은 공작(나라)에 바쳐야 한다. 그리고 그 범법자의 목숨은 공작의 손에 달려있다고 판결을 내린다. 안토니오는 샤일록이 기독교인으로 개종할 경우, 그 재산을 샤일록의 딸과 사위에게 유산으로 줄 수 있다고 허락한다. (4막 1장)
At Antonio’s trial, Portia, disguised as a lawyer, wins the day by telling Shylock that he may take his pound of flesh, but that he has no right to Antonio’s blood. The laws of Venice state that if a foreign resident directly or indirectly attempts to kill any citizen, the person he tried to kill will receive one half of the foreigner’s goods. The other half goes to the state. Whether the offending person lives or dies is up to the duke—Antonio allows Shylock to escape with half his estate if Shylock agrees to convert to Christianity and leave everything to his daughter and Lorenzo in his will. (Act 4 Scene1)
작가의 의견: 첫째, 친구를 위해서 기꺼이 위험을 무릅쓰는 것은 아름답다. 하지만 실생활에서, 과도한 빚을 지거나 보증를 서는 것은 참으로 위험에 빠질 수 있다고 생각한다. 둘째, 어려운 상황에서도 포르시아처럼 최선을 다한다면, 하늘이 무너져도 솟아날 구멍이 있다고 본다. 셋째, 샤일록처럼 완고한 고집을 피우다가는 갑절로 손해볼 수 있다.
Artist Opinion: Firstly, It is very beautiful that willingly to take a risk for the friend. However in real life, it is very dangerous to take on too much debt or guarantee sb’s debt. Secondly in difficulty, Like Porcia if we do our best, there is a way out of every situation however bad. Thirdly, Like Shylock, if we are stubbon, we may lose money over a bet.

Disguised and renamed Cesario, Viola becomes Duke Orsino's favorite servant and falls in love with him. He asks Cesario to deliver his love messages to Olivia, who is in mourning for her brother and vows to wear a veil and not marry for seven years and pretend to be in love with her. (Act 1 Scene 4)

오베론(중세와 르네상스 문학에 등장하는 요정의 왕)과 티타니아(요정의 여왕)가 인디안 소년에 대한 문제로 다툰다. 오베론은 퍽(요정 로빈) 의 도움으로 잠에서 깨어난 뒤 첫 번째로 목격한 사물과 깊은 사랑에 빠지게 되는 사랑의 묘약을 사용하여 이 문제를 해결하기로 한다. 티타니아가 달밤에 잠든 사이 오베론은 그녀의 눈에 묘약을 붓는다. (2막 1장) (하단부 좌측) 닉 보텀이 친구와 다투면서 옥신각신하며 서로 쫓고 쫓기는 사이에 경사진 곳에서 티타니아가 잠든 곳에서 잠을 청한다. 퍽(로빈)이 닉 보텀의 머리를 당나귀로 변하게 마법을 부린다. (우측 하단) 티타니아는 오베론의 묘약으로 인해 잠에서 깬 뒤 보텀과 사랑에 빠지게 된다. (상단) (3막 1장)
Oberon(King of the fairies in medieval and Renaissance literature) and Titania(Queen of the fairies) argue over an Indian boy. Oberon, enlisting the help of Puck(Fairy Robin) , decides to use a magical juice which causes a person to fall in love with the first thing they see upon waking up. When Titania sleeping in the moonlight, Oberon pours magic flower juice on her eye, (bottom left) (Act 2 Scene 1)When Bottom’s friends flee in terror, Nick Bottom chases after them and ends up in a glade with the sleeping Titania, Puck(Robin) magically transforms Nick Bottom’s head into that of an ass. (bottom right) Titania wakes and falls in love with Bottom because of Oberon's potion. (upper) (Act 3 Scene 1)
5대 희극 속에 등장하는 사람들의 생각을 살펴보면 놀라운 교훈들이 담겨 있다. <말광량이 길들이기>의 몇 장면을 살펴보면, 유머스러운 장면도 있지만, 부부간의 사랑에 대한 끝없는 노력에 대한 암시가 담겨 있다. <한여름밤의 꿈>의 경우를 살펴보면, 사랑을 위해서 애쓰는 미묘한 신화적인 힘에 대해서 인간의 본성 속에 담겨진 호기심과 애착 등에 대해서 설명하고 있다. <십이야>의 경우 사랑을 위해서 엄청난 노력을 경주하는 경우를 볼 수 있다. <뜻데로 하세요>의 경우, 우정을 위해서 모든 것을 버리고, 숲속으로 도망가는 셀리아의 결정을 통해서, 현재의 일반적인 물질만능주의에 대해 반성하는 교훈이 담겨 있다. <베니스의 상인>과 같은 경우는 첫째, 친구를 위해서 기꺼이 보증을 서는 것은 참으로 위험에 빠질 수 있다고 생각한다. 둘째, 어려운 상황에서도 포르시아처럼 최선을 다한다면, 하늘이 무너져도 솟아날 구멍이 있다고 본다. 셋째, 샤일록처럼 완고한 고집을 피우다가는 갑절로 손해볼 수 있다. 실생활에 대한 교훈이 현대에도 큰 교훈이 된다.
<My thoughts on Shakespeare's Big Five Comedy>
If you look at the thoughts of people in the five major comedies, there are surprising lessons. If you look at some scenes of "How to Train Your Speech," there are humorous scenes, but they contain hints of endless efforts for love between couples. In the case of "A Midsummer Night's Dream", it explains the curiosity and attachment contained in human nature to the subtle mythical power of struggling for love. In the case of "Twenty," you can see a case of making great efforts for love. In the case of "Do It as Your Wish", there is a lesson in reflecting on the current general materialism through Celia's decision to abandon everything for friendship and run away into the forest. In the case of "The Merchant of Venice", first, I think that willing to make a guarantee for a friend can be in real danger. Second, even in difficult situations, if you do your best like Portia, there is a hole in which the sky will rise even if it collapses. Third, you can lose double if you are stubborn like Shylock. Lessons about real life are great lessons in modern times.
셰익스피어의 <코미디 뜻대로 하세요(1603년 첫연출됨)> 에는 아주 유명한 독백의 명대사가 포함되어 있다. 그 연설의 내용 가운데에는 “모든 세계는 하나의 무대이다”(2막 7장)라는 우수적인 방랑자 자크에게서 비롯된 것으로, 사람의 상태는 연극의 무대와 비교될 수 있으며, 남자들의 경우 그들의 삶가운데 7 가지의 역할을 수행한다. (남자의 7가지 연령이라고 말한다.) 그것은 (1) 유아, (2)학생, (3) 사랑꾼, (4) 병사, (5) 정의의 사나이, (6) 판타롱(판타롱은16세기 이탈리아 코미디 연극 속에 등장하는 비유적인 어휘로서 ‘말라깽이 노인’,늙고 어리석은 베니스의 상인, 집안의 가장, 일반적으로 음탕하고 연인들의 음모에 종종 속기 쉬운 사람으로 사전에 설명되어 있다.) Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It (first performance – 1603) contains one of his most famous monologues. In the speech “All the World’s a Stage” (Act II Scene VII) given by the melancholic travellerJacques, the human condition is compared to a stage play and men to actors playing seven parts during their lives. Those of (1) the Infant, (2) the School-boy, (3) the Lover, (4) the Soldier, (5) the Justice, (6) the Pantaloon [Stock character from a 16th-century brand of Italian theatre called commedia dell’arte. According to dictionary.reference.com, a pantaloon is “a foolish old Venetian merchant, usually the head of a household, generally lascivious and frequently deceived in the course of lovers’ intrigues”] and (7) the Old Man.
